Veterinary Anesthesiologist Available Monthly at HVDOS

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Dianna Ovbey, DVM, MS, DACVAA will be available on a monthly basis at the Hospital for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery to assist with high-risk anesthesia during oral surgery.

Dr. Ovbey is based out of Charleston, SC and owns Southeast Veterinary Anesthesia Services. As an experienced board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist, she has provided care in both academic and private practice settings on both small and large animals. She has worked in conjunction with specialists in nearly every field including surgery, dentistry, radiation oncology, internal medicine, and emergency/critical care. May 2019 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Available!

At the Hospital for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery, we have been offering Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to accelerate healing in our patients for over three years. Beginning in 2019, we are excited to share this resource with out referring veterinary community on an out-patient basis for various conditions, not just dental. The goal of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is to increase the amount of oxygen delivered to diseased tissue to help it heal. Patients are placed in an enclosed chamber and delivered 100% oxygen under increased pressure. This environment allows up 20 times more oxygen to be delivered to diseased tissue. Oxygen delivered in this method can have remarkable anti-inflammatory, antimocrobial, and tissue healing benefits. HBOT can be used in conjunction with conventional treatment methods to reduce recovery time and increase patient healing. Most patients are very relaxed in the chamber and many even sleep. HBOT is a great anesthesia-free treatment option for veterinary patients.

February 2019 - Happy Pet Dental Health Month!

This month the Hospital for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery celebrates Pet Dental Health Month. Did you know that by age 3, most dogs and cats suffer from periodontal disease? Perhaps you've had a kiss from your furry best friend only to think, "Yuck! Doggie breath!" We can only imagine what our breath would smell like if we didn't brush regularly! Fortunately for our furry family members, with proper care, periodontal disease can be preventable and even in early stages reversible. Not sure if your dog or cat has periodontal disease? Schedule an appointment with one of our dentists to find out and have a custom treatment plan created that includes ideas on what to do at home! This month every patient will go home with a complimentary goodie bag with samples to try.

What New Year's resolution do you think your dog and cat would make?

Just in case they didn't make one, here is an idea - daily tooth brushing!  Here are some tips to get you started:

• Make brushing a positive experience with lots of treats and praise.
• Use a toothpaste made for especially for pets.  Chicken flavor is tasty!
• Start slowly. Begin with getting your pet used to having his or her mouth and lips being touched.
• Once comfortable, introduce the toothbrush with toothpaste.
• Start with brushing the top teeth and add the bottom teeth in when your pet becomes more comfortable.
• Brush the teeth once to twice daily. 
• Make sure to bring your dog and cat to see their favorite Veterinary Dentist at HVDOS every year for a dental checkup!

A BIG Congratulations to Dr. Katherine Queck for passing the exam for the American Veterinary Dental College.  In addition to being a Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, Dr. Queck is now a Board Certified Dental Specialist.  

Once a year the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) offers a rigorous examination to test the skills of qualified applicants.  Very few pass this examination to receive Diplomate status.  Dr. Queck now joins a small group of Veterinary Dentists who have successfully completed this process, becoming one of the two Veterinary Dental Specialists practicing in the Charlotte, NC and Mt. Pleasant, SC areas.  She is excited to use these credentials to continue providing the best advanced dental care for cats and dogs and share her experience with veterinarians in the Carolinas.
